Tooth Enamel LossYour teeth are one of your most important assets. They help you chew and speak, and they can be a source of great pride. But over time, tooth enamel loss will inevitably occur due to the wear and tear from everyday use. What's more, it's not just about age – genetics also play a role in how much enamel we have as children. The key is prevention! By taking these small but crucial steps, you'll ensure that you keep all of your natural teeth for life! All the same, however, we lose enamel covering over time, and this is why.

What Causes Tooth enamel loss?

Several factors could cause tooth enamel loss. One is erosion, which occurs when acidic foods and beverages contact the teeth over a prolonged period of time. This causes the calcium in your teeth to dissolve because it's not protected by saliva or fluoride like other parts of your mouth. Another common cause of tooth enamel loss is acid reflux, which is when acidic stomach contents flow back up into your esophagus and mouth. Acidic foods like oranges, tomatoes, grapefruit juice or coffee can all create tooth erosion if you eat these types of food frequently.

The last common cause of tooth enamel loss is the over-consumption of acidic foods and beverages, which can break down your teeth' protective surface. For example, sodas, sports drinks, fruit juices and wine are all acidic foods that can cause tooth erosion if you drink them frequently.

Does whitening teeth erode the enamel?

No. Whitening teeth does not cause enamel loss or erosion. However, it's important to remember that the use of whitening products over an extended period of time can wear down your tooth enamel over time. If you are using a home kit to whiten your smile, make sure you brush with fluoride toothpaste and do not exceed the recommended time and number of applications.

Does chewing ice cause tooth enamel loss?

Yes, in some cases. Chewing on hard foods like ice can contribute to erosion if you do this for a long period of time or chew it frequently throughout the day. If you notice that your teeth are sensitive when eating cold or frozen foods, then you may be causing damage to your tooth enamel.
