How to Choose an Electric Toothbrush

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Dr. Burnham
How to Choose an Electric ToothbrushYour toothbrush is your defense against tooth decay and gum disease, and therefore, picking out the right toothbrush is important. However, with the number of products available on the market, it's perfectly normal to get confused. Here, we outline the various features to consider when choosing an electric toothbrush.

Size

There is no one right size for individuals to choose since this depends on each person's mouth. The right size toothbrush head is one that isn't too big or too small and allows you to reach the different areas in your mouth without difficulty. The toothbrush should also have a handle that is long enough for you to hold comfortably.

Brush Type

There are many different types of electric toothbrushes, including sonic, rotating, pulsating, and oscillating toothbrushes. Choosing between these depends on different needs and considerations. Rotating toothbrushes are usually the most inexpensive, and pulsating and rotating toothbrushes are excellent at dislodging plaque.

Bristles

Many people believe that hard bristles will help clean their teeth more thoroughly. This isn't the case at all – we recommend opting for soft bristles since they will be gentler on your teeth. Soft bristles can also reach under your gums and remove plaque and bacteria buildup.

Other Features

Electric toothbrushes come with a variety of other features to choose from. This depends on budget, as well as individual needs.

Pressure Sensor

One such feature is a pressure sensor, which is especially useful for those suffering from sensitivity. Electric toothbrushes with pressure sensors alert the user when they're using too much pressure and are brushing their teeth too harshly. Those prone to overbrushing can also benefit from such a feature.

Timer

If you constantly find yourself brushing for less than two minutes, you may be interested in electric toothbrushes with a brushing timer. These toothbrushes alert the user when two minutes have passed or automatically stop after the recommended amount of time.

All these aspects will help you narrow down your choices and find the perfect electric toothbrush for your needs. However, it is important to note that an electric toothbrush isn't a replacement for regular dental appointments. If you're guilty of this, call Rogue Valley Dental Center at (541) 779-4517 to schedule an appointment with either Dr. Taucher or Dr. Burnham.
